What ceramic coating does, and what it doesn't

A ceramic coating is a liquid layer applied to corrected paint. It bonds to the surface and cures into a hard, glossy finish that deepens the shine, makes water bead and run off, and makes the car easier to wash.

It does not stop stone chips or deep scratches. It is a thin layer, so the paint underneath has to be right before it goes on. That is why every MCC package starts with paint preparation, and why we pair coating with paint protection film when chip protection matters.

Gtechniq vs Modesta: which ceramic coating is right for your car?

We apply both ceramic paint coatings at our Redditch studio. Both are professional coatings, so the choice comes down to what you want from the car. Gtechniq is the choice for surface hardness and chemical resistance, with Crystal Serum Ultra Professional rated up to 9 years. Modesta is the choice when the look matters most, with BC-05 giving the ultimate glossy look and ratings from 3 years up to 10.

The 3-year coating is included in every package, a 4 to 5-year option sits above it, and Modesta BC-05 is our ultimate glossy look, rated up to 10 years. It suits owners who care most about the finish and still want years of protection.

Need protection against stone chips?

Ceramic coating adds gloss, water beading and easier washing. It does not stop stone chips. For that, SunTek paint protection film adds a physical layer over the panels that take the hits, with a 12-year warranty and Front End fitting from £1,195. Many owners choose both: film on the front end and ceramic coating over the rest of the paint.

Gtechniq or Modesta: which is better?

Neither is better outright, they are built for different things. Gtechniq is the durable choice, with hardness and chemical resistance, and it suits cars that are kept for years or cover a lot of miles. Modesta is the finish choice, adding depth and a glossy look to the paint. Every package includes a coating from one of the two, and we'll talk you through which suits your car.

Does ceramic coating stop stone chips and scratches?

No. A ceramic coating adds gloss, water beading and makes the car easier to wash, but it won't stop stone chips or deeper scratches. For that you need paint protection film, which adds a physical layer over the panels that take the hits.
